Bidjar rugs, hailing from the northwestern mountains of Iran, have long been revered for their exceptional durability and robust construction. Traditionally, their designs have mirrored this strength, featuring bold geometric patterns. The Garous design, a hallmark of Bidjar rugs, is known for its central panel and intricate geometric borders. These borders often incorporate squares, interlocking hooks, and stars, elements that might hold both practical and symbolic significance. The geometric precision could reflect the orderliness of nomadic life, while the stars could possess celestial meaning, guiding journeys across vast landscapes.
The use of a blue background in this Bidjar rug is particularly noteworthy. While many Bidjar rugs utilize a bold red background, the blue creates a distinct aesthetic experience. Historically, the red background was believed to symbolize power and protection, values deeply ingrained in the nomadic communities who wove these rugs. The blue background, however, offers a different perspective. It evokes a sense of calmness and serenity, perhaps reflecting a yearning for a more settled life or a desire to incorporate new influences. The blue might also hold symbolic meaning, representing the vastness of the sky or the tranquility of water, elements revered by nomadic cultures.
